This product is made from the wood of Doon Kul, the walnut tree, by skilled artisans in Kashmir. The craft of walnut wood carving in Kashmir dates back several centuries, and traditional hand-drawn designs often bear ornate carvings of motifs such as chinar leaves, lotus, grapes that are symbolic of the region.
The intricate and time-consuming process of hand-carving walnut wood begins with wooden planks being dried out for typically six months to a year, followed by cutting and shaping into the desired form using a hand plane. The surface is smoothened using sandpaper, and then polished to get the final product.
• To keep the wood in good condition and to maintain the colour and shine of the wood, it is advisable to apply a little oil from time to time. Use a soft cloth and a conditioning oil for this purpose. Steps to follow for conditioning: After gently washing the product as described above, rub a liberal amount of conditioning oil (olive oil or tung oil) all over the product. Set the product on a towel to let the oil soak in for a few hours, then apply a second coat. Repeat until the product doesn’t seem to absorb any more oil. With a clean, gentle cloth, rub off any oily residue that’s left over.
• This product is not microwave-safe.
