The craft of walnut wood carving in Kashmir dates back several centuries, and traditional hand-drawn designs often bear ornate carvings of motifs such as chinar leaves, lotus, grapes that are symbolic of the region.
The intricate and time-consuming process of hand-carving walnut wood begins with wooden planks being dried out for typically six months to a year, followed by cutting and shaping into the desired form using a hand plane. The surface is smoothened using sandpaper, and then polished to get the final product.
